Diversity : Leading by example
Derbyshire Probation Trust is committed to leading by example in promoting an environment that values diversity and respects difference.
Our focus is to meet the diverse needs of our service users by ensuring that diversity is at the heart of the organisation.
We are committed to ensuring that the services we provide are free from any form of discrimination. Our Single Equality Scheme (SES) details our approach - it can be found on our Information page, as can our annual Diversity Reports.
For us, diversity is about providing equal opportunities to all and valuing the diversity of the communities we serve. One of the main ways we do this is by making sure our employees have a good understanding of equality and diversity.

Equality
Public Sector Equality Duty
We have a general duty under the Law to:
-
Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
-
Advance equality of opportunity.
-
Foster good relations between people
We have a specific duty under the law to publish sufficient information to demonstrate how we meet the general equality duty across everything we do. Comprehensive figures about the offenders we supervise is covered in the report Offender Data for the Year Ending September 2011. Further information about both staff and offenders is covered in our Diversity Report 2010/11.
In our Strategic Plan 2009-2013 we make clear that one of our core values is diversity in that we celebrate and recognise cultural diversity in the way we deliver our services. Our approach to diversity is set out in a statement Approach to Diversity, and further detailed in our Single Equality Scheme which was revised in December 2009 and been the basis of our actions in the last two years. In our Staff Survey in December 2011 we tested out the perceptions of staff about the Trust’s commitment to diversity – see Staff Perceptions about Diversity.
We are now preparing to publish by April 2012 our objectives to address any ways in which we may need to change what we do so as to ensure that we do not treat some people in a worse way than others. We are analysing the information in our reports and will engage with and consult groups inside and outside the Probation Service in preparing those objectives.
