The Board is appointed by the Home Secretary and oversees the Probation Service in Derbyshire.

It has corporate responsibility for the proper discharge by Derbyshire Probation Area of its statutory functions and compliance with statutory or administrative requirements for the use of public finds.  It ensures that the high standards of corporate governance are observed at all times.

Its responsibilities include:

• Overall strategic direction of the organisation within the framework determined by the Home Secretary
• Operation within the limits of authority as agreed with the National Director and in accordance with conditions relating to the use of public funds
• that when reaching decisions, the Board has complied with any directions given by the Home Secretary and taken into account any guidance given by him
• the appointment of employees as the Board thinks fit to carry out its obligations within the grant in aid funding provided by the Home Secretary

Board members are recruited from the local communities and from a range of backgrounds.  Non-executive members are appointed for a period of no longer than three years and are eligible for re-appointment, but for a period not exceeding six years overall.

The Chief Officer of Derbyshire Probation Area is also a member of the Board.

Meetings are held at the Gothic Wharf, Cromford Mill, Cromford.  They are normally held in the ground floor room which has disabled access.  However, as this may change on occasion, please check in advance if you wish to attend and require access by phoning Corry Bond, PA to the Board on 01629 55422.
