Community Payback

Community Payback, also known as unpaid work, is undertaken by offenders all year round and in all weathers, safety permitting.  In Derbyshire, we supervised some 171,500 hours of unpaid work by offenders on projects around the county in 2009/2010.  This was worth over £900.000 to those projects. 

Work included clearing church yards and other community areas, projects for schools, litter removal, community safety projects such as clearing pathways and alleys of overgrown foliage and removing graffiti, renovating allotments and managing plots and redecorating community centres .  Offenders are working to make your community a better place to live.

Justice Seen, Justice Done is the latest campaign by government to raise awareness of the vast amount of work undertaken across England and Wales by offenders given an Unpaid Work requirement by the courts.

Since December 2008, offenders have been required to wear orange high visibility vests whilst doing unpaid work - subject to agreement by the project recipients.  This is not a part of the punishment, but is a way of showing you, the public, that reparation to local communities is an important part of community sentencing.
