Derbyshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT)

The Derbyshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) works to deliver the national drugs strategy at local level and in response to local need. The DAAT is a partnership of agencies with a responsibility to tackle drug and alcohol misuse.

Agencies involved include:

  • Derbyshire Constabulary
  • North Derbyshire Health Authority
  • South Derbyshire PCT
  • Derbyshire County Council
  • The National Probation Service - Derbyshire
  • Derbyshire Youth Offending Service
  • East Midlands Drug Prevention Advisory Service

The National Drugs Strategy ‘Tackling Drugs to Build a Better Britain’ sets out a 10 year strategy to tackle drug misuse. The strategy focuses on four areas:

  • Helping young people resist drug misuse in order to achieve their full potential in society
  • Work in communities to reduce drug related crime and nuisance
  • Treatment to enable people with drug and alcohol problems to overcome them and lead healthy and crime-free lives
  • Stifling the availability of illegal drugs, especially heroin and cocaine on our streets.

The Derbyshire DAAT Action Plan sets out the local targets to deliver this strategy. The local targets are:

  • To reduce the proportion of people under the age of 25 reporting use of illegal drugs in the last month and previous year substantially, and to reduce the proportion of young people using heroin and cocaine by 25% by 2005 and by 50% by 2008.
  • To reduce levels of repeat offending amongst drug misusing offenders from present levels by 50% by 2008
  • To increase the number of problem drug misusers in drug treatment programmes from 1,962 in 2000 to 100% increase on 1999/2000 figures in 2008.
  • To reduce access to Class A Drugs amongst young people by 50% by 2008
  • To improve access by parents and carers of drug users to sources of help
  • To work with the Employment Service, education and training providers, and employers to improve their capacity to respond to drug and alcohol related issues.
  • To develop countywide guidance on working with drug misusing parents and their children
